Katie Funny...

Katie has gotten in big trouble lately for sticking her fingers in her ears when she doesn't want to listen to what I am saying. Yesterday I was talking to her about something exciting like chores I expected her to accomplish that day and she just looked at me and said, "I turned my ears off." I think I need a copy of the Serenity Prayer in every room...

CHEEEEEESE!

We are heading to a baby shower this afternoon...

Katie: What's a baby shower?

Me: It's kind of like a party for a baby.

Pause.

Katie: Is there gonna be cake?

Me: Yes.

Katie: Let's go!

Surf's Up!...or not...

Katie and Caroline had some friends over to swim today because the weatherman said it was going to be HOT HOT HOT. The weatherman was WRONG WRONG WRONG! The kids got a whopping 20 minutes in the pool before the thunderstorms hit and the party moved indoors. 6 Mamas and 10 wet kiddos under the age of 7 in our basement eating lunch and killing time waiting for the storms to pass. It's amazing what kids will come up with to entertain themselves. Needless to say, it was very loud. Thank God for the mama who brought the margaritas.

Showtime!

Katie’s dance recital was this weekend. She was mostly excited about getting to wear makeup for the first time. She and her BFF Ally did a great job in “Sea Cruise” to which she shook her tail feathers and “surfed” to the Beach Boys’ “Catch A Wave.” Her older cousins took hip hop this year and were also in the recital. Caroline did a little dancing in the aisle before she had to be removed from the auditorium after exhausting her snacks and figuring out that she could not join the dancers on stage.

Aquatic Accessories

Caroline likes to swim. Caroline LOVES to wear every aquatic accessory she can find!

Catch Me If You Can!

We've had a lot of conversations about how caffeine is not for kids because it gives you a lot of energy and little kids don't need any more energy...

Katie (eyeing my Sonic cup): Does your drink have caffeine?

Me: Yes.

Katie: And you need caffeine to give you energy to help you keep up with me and Caroline?

Me: YES!

I return to putting things away in the kitchen when I notice Katie has quietly taken my Diet Coke and is drinking it a few feet away...

Me: What are you doing drinking my drink?! I just told you it has caffeine!

Katie: I know. I don't want you to catch me!

Me: You mean you don't want me to be able to keep up with you and Caroline?

Katie: Yeah!!

Kid for Sale 5-18-10

Repeatedly when I ask Katie NOT to do something, she automatically fires back with "Certainly I WILL!" or "Of course I WILL!" and then immediately - and dramatically - goes and does what I just asked her not to. Hello 3-year-old defiance! So last night as we were heading up the stairs to bed I told Katie I was disappointed in some of her behavior yesterday. Her response: "Maybe tomorrow I'll be better." I told her that would be nice...

This morning we finally have some sunshine and since Katie's window faces East, she got up at 5:30 am. Since she had all kinds of time to play before school, she spent the morning in her new swimsuit cleaning the windows in the kitchen. (For whatever reason, she thinks this is big fun). When I told her it was time to get dressed for school, of course a meltdown ensued. I pointed out that she had said she would be better today. She stopped dead in her tracks and - in her swimsuit with a wad of paper towels in one hand and the Windex in the other - looked at me and said "I. Said. MAYBE!"

Touche!!

I laughed at her - I couldn't help it because that is exactly what she had said! Ha!

When I finally got her clothes on, she demanded to do socks and shoes herself. Fine. She went out the door to school this morning in a navy/yellow outfit and these tacky purple socks with white lace (they are hideous so of course she loves them) and black church shoes...

Ya Get Whatcha Get and Ya Don't Throw a Fit!

One of Katie's take-home phrases from preschool this year was "Ya get whatcha get and ya don't throw a fit!" (God bless those teachers!)

Cue week one of summer vacation...the girls and I are swimming and Katie is playing with one of those cylinder foam pump water guns that shoots 20 feet or so. I've got Caroline bobbing in the pool and Katie is standing on the steps practicing her water gun skills. I guess she gets bored so she turns around, aims and shoots me in the face. Point Blank. Thank God for sunglasses! Naturally I am PISSED (as this occurs at the end of a very long day anyway) and I immediately lay into her about how you should never shoot people in the face, it hurts, etc. She looks at me, gun still dripping, and says "Ya get whatcha get and ya don't throw a fit!!"
